Announcement!
One of the first things that I learned when I adopted Rocco is that I needed to keep all of my books well out of his reach. Here’s why:
The big announcement is: We’re starting a book club! Here are some imagined questions and answers to help you decide whether or not you want to get involved.
Why a book club?
Forming genuine community. In my online interactions, I’ve found that they tend to be one-sided because of the way that I’ve used social media and I want to get to know you better, especially since I feel like you know so much about me (and Rocco)
How will this be different from other book clubs?
Honestly, it will probably be pretty similar. We’ll read popular lit (think thrillers, literary fiction, memoirs) and talk about it as Catholics. That’s it.
What kind of books will you be reading? Who will be picking them?
I have to be honest, this is book club has some selfish motivations: I would like to discuss the books that I read with other people. I’ll be picking the books each month. If you’d like to have an idea of what kinds of books we’ll read, you can check out my Goodreads account here (and feel free to add me!).
Can I join if I’m not Catholic?
Of course! This could be an interesting opportunity for you to learn about some of the unique ways that Catholics look at the world and art. And your perspective would enrich the discussion as we seek to understand how God is working in our lives.
How will this work?
The book club will take place on Zoom at 8pm EST on the first Friday of each month. Paid subscribers to this newsletter will receive the Zoom link and any other necessary info.
Bring a snack, bring a drink, bring the book if you want. It’ll be super casual.
Why do I have to pay?
The internet is a weird place.
Posting a Zoom link on social media is an invitation for a disaster. This way, the book club will be a group of people who are committed to community and not just someone who has nothing else to do and is interested in causing trouble.
If for whatever reason you are unable to pay the subscription fee to receive the book club information, please let me know. I have the ability to give a certain number of free subscriptions and I want to use them! No one will be excluded because of an inability to pay for a subscription.
I’m already subscribing. How do I become a paid subscriber?
Right here! The subscription is $5/month of $50/year.
How do I get the book?
Preferably from the library! I am a huge library stan and see it as a wonderful way to be connected to your local community. Otherwise, try to get it from a local bookstore before turning to Amazon.
So what will be the first book?
Becoming Trader Joe: How I Did Business My Way and Still Beat the Big Guys by Joe Coloumbe. We’ll be meeting on Zoom at 8pm EST on Friday January 7th. I hope to see you then!
