I spent Thanksgiving alone this year. It’s the third time this has happened and it always seems way worse ahead of time than it is on the actual day. This year, still basking in the luxury of my AMC A-List subscription (it's really not that expensive), I decided to hit up the earliest showing of Wicked.
Now, something about me is that I am a TikTok girlie. I occasionally create videos of the dogs, but I mainly like watching recipe videos and keeping up with Ilona Maher.
The marketing for Wicked has obviously been everywhere. I imagine this is what the Barbie movie would have been like had the SAG-AFTRA strike not been going on.
Initially when I saw the Wicked trailer during the Super Bowl last year, I was not impressed. I actually saw the original Broadway production with Kristin Chenoweth and and Idina Menzel in 2004 and I couldn’t imagine the story acted by anyone else. But the reviews were fantastic and I get to see up to 3 movies a week, so I wasn’t about to be left out of this cultural moment.
I actually fell asleep during the movie and woke up just as “Popular” was coming to a close. The movie has a runtime of 2 hours and 40 minutes and in a dark theater after a night of not great sleep, I was in total peace.
A meme that has been circulating the interview is people saying that they are “holding space for the lyrics of ‘Defying Gravity’,” a meme that originates in an interview between the stars of the film, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, with Tracy Gilchrist.
